Google is planning on launching a service that will be direct competition for the Apple iTunes software. Many critics believe that they have entered the market far too late to be successful.
The company plans on revealing the service at a Google event in Los Angeles. People who do sign up will be able to store their music online and listen to songs on multiple devices. However Apple opened the iTunes store in 2003 and has achieved a high level of success. As Apple is a large, established company critics believe that the market is too saturated for this product to work.
It is no secret that the two companies are rivals. They are currently locked into a fight for mobile advertising and smartphone customers. Google also has other big companies in its way. For example Amazon.com has paired up with Facebook to bolster its music storage and download service.
It appears that Google has spent so much time working on improving their search facilities that they have neglected expansion opportunities. An example of this is their social networking platform. While the brand has dabbled in social networking before, it was only in 2011 they released Google Plus. Facebook was and still is dominating the social networking market at the time of the launch.
Only time will tell if this latest venture will become a worthy competitor to Apple iTunes. However well known brands such as Sony, Vivendi and EMI have signed on. The songs will cost one to two dollars a pop however Google may offer specials in the future.
