Samsung has released a new television ad which pokes fun at Apple devotees who are prepared to wait in line for upgrades. The advertisement displays a line of people waiting outside an Apple store for the latest Apple product. The shoppers then spout phrases such as "if it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?".
The crowd then sees a person nearby using a phone that isn't an iPhone. A member of the crowd mentions that it is a Samsung device. Someone then mentions they could never buy a Samsung product as they are "creative". Their friendly promptly retorts "dude, you're a barista".
Samsung is obviously trying to get people talking about their new advertisement. People who are not Apple fans will no doubt delight in this light mocking of Apple fanatics. Whether or not it will convince people to buy a Samsung product over an iPhone remains to be seen. While the S II beat out the iPhone in a smartphone of the year contest, the iPhone still outsells this model.
While this ad may be slightly amusing Samsung may be better off trying to build a more attractive brand image. Making fun of iPhone fans is simply not enough to boost their own sales. The iPhone itself may not be the best phone in the market however successful brand imaging has made it the most desirable. It is hard to see buyers rushing out to purchase the Samsung smartphone after viewing this ad on television.
